Welcome to Year 1. At Aureus Primary School our classes are called Johnson and Kandinsky. Mrs Ashforth-Smith and Miss Mallon are the teachers. We are also lucky to work with Mrs Houldey, Mrs Balsamino and Mrs Dickerson.
We practise our Phonics each day to develop our reading and writing skills. In Year 1 all children take the Phonics Screening check in the Summer Term to demonstrate how much phonics they have learned. We also have daily English and Maths lessons. In English we learn about Traditional Tales, Poetry, Non-Fiction and Information Texts. In Maths we develop an understanding of Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, early Multiplication and Division, Shape, Space and Measure and Fractions.
One of our highlights is a termly Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Showcase where parents are invited in to see all our amazing work! In our Year 1 STEAM sessions we enjoy learning about: Materials, The Local Area, Vehicles, Art, Animals and Plants and Festivals and Celebrations from Around World. We will also go on some terrific trips to bring your child’s learning to life.
How you can help
- Read every day with your child and encourage them to develop a love of books.
- Use Numbots to support their Maths fluency skills.
- Practise their spellings for a weekly test.
- Ask them what they have learnt at school each day.
