Wider Curriculum

This term, our Wider Curriculum focus is Technology and we will be answering the question ‘How have structures influenced our lives?’ Through our project, the children will use their knowledge of forces and different mechanisms to make a mechanical device, which will move water, inspired by the Ancient Egyptians. Through this learning journey we will:
• Use testing to develop ideas.
• Order events chronologically.
• Use a range of sources to find out about a historical period.
• Understand changes over time.
• Understand the importance of the River Nile.
• Understand the achievements of the Ancient Egyptians.
• Create a prototype for a component.
• Explore friction and air/water resistance.
• Create a design based on a design brief.
• Create and test a prototype.
• Create a purposeful and functional final product.
• Evaluate a product based on a design brief.

Maths 

Our topics this half term will be:
• Money (composition and calculation).
• Negative numbers (counting, comparing and calculating).
• Multiplication and division (short multiplication and division methods).

Writing 

Our first unit this term will a narrative, based around ‘The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr Morris Lessmore’. During this unit, we will:
• Add phrases to make sentences more precise and detailed.
• Use similes and personification to provide description.
• Link clauses in sentences using a range of subordinating and coordinating conjunctions.
• Link ideas across paragraphs using adverbials of time (e.g. later), place (e.g. nearby) and number (e.g. secondly).

Our second unit will be a non-fiction piece of writing, composing a biography about an Egyptian Pharoah.

Reading 

In Reading, we will be looking at the text ‘Shackleton's Journey’ – a non-fiction text by William Grill. This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of Ernest Shackleton’s incredible expedition, as he attempted to cross Antarctica. It is a story of heroism, human endurance and the value of 
teamwork. The text is clear and informative but it is the artwork which dominates and allows the reader to engage with and understand Shackleton’s amazing adventures and achievements.

Computing 

This term in Computing, we will be learning how to create short videos in groups. As the children progress through this unit, they will be exposed to topic-based language and develop the skills of capturing, editing, and manipulating video. At the conclusion of the unit, the children will have the opportunity to reflect on and assess their progress in creating a video.

HRE  

In HRE, we will be looking at growing and changing. The following areas will be covered:
Talking about puberty:
• Explaining the main physical and emotional changes that happen during puberty.

• Being able to ask questions about puberty with confidence.

The reproduction system:
• Understanding how puberty affects the reproductive organs.
• Describing what happens during menstruation and sperm production.

Puberty, help and support:
• Explaining how to keep clean during puberty.
• Explaining how emotions/relationships change during puberty.
• Know how to get help and support during puberty.

Music 

Our music topic this term is 'Classroom Jazz’. All the learning is focused around two tunes and improvising: Three Note Bossa and Five Note Swing. During this unit, we will:
• Listen and appraise: The Three Note Bossa & Five Note Swing.
• Play instrumental parts and improvise in a Bossa Nova style using the notes G, A + B, and in the swing, style using notes D, E, G, A + B.
• Perform and share our instrumental parts in groups or as solos.

PE 

We will be covering the following objectives in Orienteering and Outdoor Adventurous Activities:
• I can follow an orienteering activities route.
• I can understand a map and directions. 
• I can create my own orienteering course included resources.
• I can enjoy trying others orienteering course with others working as a team. 
• I can evaluate my course and map effectively.

We will be reviewing and extending out gymnastic skills this term and continuing to sequence, 
covering the below skills:
• I can roll, travel, jump, balance and rotate (cartwheel).
• I can perform a backwards roll. 
• I can use the springboard. 
• I can perform basic sequences on floor and apparatus – 5 – 7 elements.
• I can evaluate my routine and use a video to support this.

MFL – French 

This term’s topic is ‘On the Move’. The children will learn to develop their conversational skills via some new topics including:
• Transport
• Direction 
• Movement
We will learn to conjugate the high-frequency verb ‘to go’ and use it in context.

RE 

This term we will be:
• Explaining Christian beliefs about free will.
• Explaining how Christian beliefs about free will affect their daily life.
• Explain Christian beliefs about sin.
